In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus said some incredible things to the disciples on that mountain in Galilee, probably several weeks after his resurrection. In verse 18, Jesus declares, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." In verse 19, Jesus tells them the task he wants them to fulfill - "go and make disciples." These two statements are important because a commission has two elements - 1) an assignment of a task 2) the authority to carry out that task. Jesus starts the assignment of the task with a "therefore", showing they go because all authority has been given to him. He has the right to send and the right to impart authority to carry out what he is sending the disciples to do. He has given us that same task and that same authority to carry out this task.
